On the occasion of Science Day, a scientific and theoretical seminar (with international participation) entitled “Academic Integrity: National and International Experience” was held on May 20 at Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy for postgraduate (third educational and scientific level) and master’s (second educational level) students.
The event was organized by the Department of Ukrainian Linguistics and Applied Linguistics of Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy in cooperation with the academic communities of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University, Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, Vasyl Stus Donetsk National University, Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University, Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education, V. Participants of the online seminar shared their experiences of implementing the principles of academic integrity in institutions of higher education both in Ukraine and abroad. The reports covered integrity as a new leadership standard and a way of life in modern education and scientific research, as well as measures to promote and ensure academic integrity, reasons for and consequences of violations (such as training sessions, intensive courses, webinars, roundtables, and meetings), complex plagiarism detection systems, self-plagiarism, and manipulation of texts.
The speakers introduced the specifics of ensuring academic integrity at Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy (Assoc. Prof. Anzhela Irzhavska), Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University (Prof. Mykhailo Vintoniv and PhD Maria Boiko), Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University (Assoc. Prof. Halyna Hrymashevych), and Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian College of Higher Education (Assoc. Prof. Oleksandr Kordonets). Presentations by Prof. Tetiana Kosmeda and Assoc. Prof. Yelyzaveta Baran focused on plagiarism prevention practices in educational institutions of Poland and Hungary, emphasizing participants’ high level of legal awareness and academic responsibility.
During the discussion of the presentations, students and postgraduates raised several other important issues, including artificial intelligence and academic integrity, false co-authorship, ghostwriting of academic works, and corporate ethics in higher education institutions. It was concluded that these topics require wide public discussion, state-level regulation, and may serve as a foundation for future scientific and theoretical seminars.
