On the occasion of Science Day, a roundtable discussion titled “Psychological Resilience in University Students: Essential Skills Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being” was held on 15 May at Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy.
The event was jointly organised by the Department of Foreign Languages of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages, the Department of Psychology, Deep Correction and Rehabilitation of the Faculty of Psychology, and the Educational and Scientific Centre of Mental Health.
The event began with a welcoming speech by Director of the Educational and Scientific Centre of Mental Health, Yuliia Sidenko, who thanked the participants for their active engagement in recognising the importance of holding English-language sessions and for their efforts in preparing presentations on today’s relevant topics.
Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages, Nataliia Orlova focused on the origin and linguistic aspects related to the concept of resilience.
Lecturer at the Department of Psychology, Deep Correction and Rehabilitation, Victoriia Levchenko focused on biological theories of resilience.
The participants – including first-, second-, and third-year bachelor’s and first-year master’s students – discussed theoretical aspects of the core components of resilience. These included emotional awareness and regulation (Oleksandra Lytvynova), impulse control (Ilona Harbaruk), self-regulation (Polina Susla), empathy (Yuliana Vovk), self-efficacy (Mariia Ovcharenko), flexible and accurate thinking (Polina Syrotenko), and a growth mindset (Ivan Hrypak). Liana Kushneruk and Olha Zoria addressed the impact of lacking resilience skills on students’ academic performance, social and personal life.
The practical part of the roundtable focused on emotional regulation (Viktoriia Rozhkova), grounding techniques and overcoming adverse life experiences (Viktoriia Polishchyk), and the development of self-efficacy skills (Mariia Ovcharenko). The participants explored exercises aimed at enhancing self-efficacy, the process of creating an emergency emotional coping kit, and ideas for “calm-down boxes”.
Both the organisers and participants noted the welcoming and inspiring atmosphere that prevailed during the roundtable and expressed hope for future meetings to discuss professional psychological topics.
